John Holmes Overton scrapbook, 1932-1959.

Scrapbook of newspaper clippings pertaining to Overton's political career includes material about flood control programs, sugar, social events, political campaigns, New Orleans' role as an international trade center, Overton's death and funeral, and Overton Brooks' campaign for John Overton's Senate seat (1948). Included are a copy of Overton's memorial address on Huey P. Long (1936), a news release concerning a bill to reorganize the federal judiciary (1937), and commemorative programs.

Overton Brooks (1897-1961) was born near Baton Rouge, La. He served in Europe during the First World War with the Sixth Field Artillery, First Division, Regular Army. Brooks received a law degree from Louisiana State University in 1923, was admitted to the bar the same year, and commenced practice in Shreveport, La. John Holmes Overton graduated from Louisiana State University (1895) and from the law department of Tulane University (1897). He was admitted to the bar in 1898, practiced law in Alexandria, La., and was a member of the board of supervisors of Louisiana State University.
